Long ago, probably during the early Stone Age, a primitive form of the plum in the rose family of plants crossed by natural means with the meadowsweet flower. The result was a small bitter fruit, the wild apple. This hybridization probably occurred on the slopes of Tien-Shan, the "Heavenly Mountains of Kazakhstan," between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, near the present day Asian city of Almaty, which means "Father of Apples."
